After refining his dribbling and individual technical skills during his childhood in São Palo, where his family had emigrated, Walter Novellino played three brilliant seasons at Perugia under the guidance of Ilario Castagner. Nicknamed ‘Monzón’ for his innate fighting spirit and his resemblance to the popular Argentine boxer, the offensive midfielder from Montemarano was instrumental in winning the club's tenth Scudetto. He stayed with the Rossoneri following their relegation in 1980, and secured the teams return to the top flight with his goal against Monza.
