With memories of the magical night in Athens, AC Milan began the 2007/08 season with a fine victory a Marassi against Genoa. The beginning of the league was a particularly strange one: although the Rossoneri enjoyed some big victories away from home (5-1 against Lazio, 5-0 against Sampdoria), they did not manage to win a single game in front of the home crowd in 2007. The new year got off on the right foot with one of the most memorable victories of the season. On 13 January, the Rossoneri beat Napoli 5-2, breaking the San Siro curse and celebrating Ronaldo's return from injury (he scored a brace) and 18-year-old Alexandre Pato's debut, who scored in the final minutes. In the weeks that followed, another youngster, Primavera product Alberto Paloschi, came to the fore, and in general Milan found good continuity of results. Spring brought a two-horse-race, between AC Milan and Fiorentina for the fourth Champions League spot. Victories over Reggina, Livorno and Inter put Ancelotti's men into the lead, but defeat at Napoli allowed Fiorentina to overtake the Rossoneri. Victory over Udinese on the final day of the season was not enough, and Milan would be playing in the UEFA Cup the following season.
The season in International competitions saw, at the start, the team securing the fifth European Super Cup in Rossonero history, beating Sevilla in Monte Carlo. The Rossoneri did well in the Champions League - top of the group with 13 points against Celtic, Benfica and Shakhtar - and the greatest achievement of the first half of the year came in Japan: In Yokohama, in fact, where AC Milan won the Club World Cup, beating the Urawa Reds in the semi-final and then Boca Juniors in the final, a 4-2 victory with a brace from Inzaghi and goals from Nesta and Kaká. The Champions League season, however, ended in the round of 16 with Arsenal progressing to the quarter-finals.
