AC MILAN 1990/91 ROSTER

SERIE A

Fresh from the success in the European Cup final the previous year, Sacchi's Rossoneri added two important players to their roster: Angelo Carbone and Sebastiano Rossi. The season started off on the right foot with four wins in the first five Serie A matchdays and the progression to the next round of the Italian Cup (where we lost in semi-final to Roma). The team's journey in the league kept them in the top spots, but at the end, in the league, the Rossoneri finished in the second spot tied on points with Inter. At the end of the Serie A season, Arrigo Sacchi would leave the AC Milan dugout after four exciting seasons to work for the National team.

EUROPEAN CUP, EUROPEAN SUPER CUP AND INTERCONTINENTAL CUP

Our season on the International stage started by winning our second UEFA Super Cup. Boškov's Sampdoria, holders of the 1989/90 Cup Winners' Cup, were defeated 2-0 in the return match thanks to Gullit and Rijkaard after the 1-1 draw in the first leg. In December, AC Milan reached another prestigious milestone: the Intercontinental Cup final was played in Tokyo between the Rossoneri and Paraguay's Olimpia Asunción. A brace from Rijkaard and a goal from Stroppa in between the two gave the trophy to AC Milan, thus becoming the most successful European club in the competition. In the European Cup, however, after beating Club Brugge in the round of 16, the Rossoneri were eliminated by Olympique Marseille in the following round. The game was abandoned in injury time due to a power failure while AC Milan was 1-0 up, but the result, and cause of the elimination, ended up as a 3-0 win awarded to Marseille by UEFA. The episode cost AC Milan dearly, as they were disqualified from European competitions for the next year.
