THE ROSSONERE FINISH WITH A WIN: INTER BEATEN 1-0

Grimshaw's late goal claims the spoils in the derby and seals 3rd place in the table

A victory in the derby, and three points to seal a 3rd place finish. AC Milan's season came to an end in the best possible way, as they beat Inter 1-0 away from home and finished with a place on the podium in the 2022/23 Women's Serie A, overtaking Fiorentina. The winner this afternoon in Sesto San Giovanni was a great goal from Christy Grimshaw, her third in the league: a fine reward for the Scottish midfielder, a veteran of the Rossonere. The final goal of AC Milan’s season means that they retain their place in the top three, as they have done for five years now.

The eight games of the demanding Championship Round ended with five consecutive positive results for the Rossonere, a streak that was started and ended by two victories in the derby against Inter: results that redeemed the defeats in the regular season and brought great confidence to Ganz's team, who have shown character and improvements in the final part of the season. Applause for all, starting with the defence and a great performance from Laura Giuliani in the second half with two important saves to seal the clean sheet. Now, for Bergamaschi and her teammates, a break: when they return to the field, their focus will already be turned to 2023/24. Forza Milan!

MATCH REPORT
It was a hot afternoon at the Breda and things got off to a fairly slow start under the sun. In the 6th minute an overhit cross from Bergamaschi hit the top of the crossbar, in the 9th minute an attempt by Karchouni did not cause Giuliani much trouble. Inter has most of the possession, but AC Milan did not offer the hosts a chance and produced the best chance of the first half-hour on 27 minutes: Nouwen's header was blocked but Vigilucci was unable to put the follow up into the net. The Nerazzurri threatened with Chawinga from set-pieces, but neither they nor the Rossonere - through Bergamaschi and Grimshaw - were able to find a breakthrough in a goalless first half.

The tempo was still low in the second half, where two chances fell to Inter, but nothing to worry Giuliani. The game changed in the space of a minute between the 74th and 75th minutes. First, the Rossonere's number 1 made an excellent stop off Pandini's attempt from outside the box; then, AC Milan broke the deadlock with a great goal from Grimshaw, who won the ball and then fired past Durante with a precise right-footed finish. Inter tried to respond with Chawinga and Polli, but were denied by Giuliani and then Nouwen who cleared from the goal line. The six minutes of injury time did not bring a goal, and AC Milan held on for victory!
