Valentina Giacinti’s wonderful opener wasn’t enough for the Rossonere to reach the Supercoppa Femminile final. 2021 has started with a defeat for Coach Ganz’s side, who have missed out on the chance to play for their first trophy of the season on Sunday. Second-half goals from Kim and Quinn sent Fiorentina through, with the Viola completing a comeback after a solid first-half performance from AC Milan. After starting the game well and taking the lead through Giacinti with six minutes on the clock, the Rossonere failed to maintain this standard and Fiorentina were able to slowly grow into it. Coach Ganz’s team will have the chance to make amends in ten days’ time (12:30 CET on Saturday 16 January), when they’ll return to league action away to Hellas Verona. They’ll be looking to bounce back with a victory.
THE REPORT
AC Milan started the game with a great sense of determination and came up with the opening goal in the sixth minute. Vero played a long ball towards Giacinti, who expertly lobbed over Schroffenegger to find the net. The Viola looked to respond immediately, creating an opportunity in the 13th minute: Zanoli knocked the ball back for Quinn, who missed with a close-range header. It continued to be a tight match with chances at either end. In the 21st minute, Jane fired wide with a right-footed strike from distance. In the 37th minute, Vero Boquete came even closer with an effort from the edge of the area that went just wide with Schroffenegger rooted to the spot. Having gone close to doubling their lead, AC Milan were then nearly pegged back by a Fiorentina equaliser. Bonetti made the most of a mistake by Agard and ran beyond Korenčiova, but Tucceri Comini was able to get back and keep her shot out of the open goal.
AC Milan continued to exert pressure early in the second half, with Jane's effort calling Schroffenegger into action in the 53rd minute. After 56 minutes, Fiorentina levelled the score. Zanoli’s cross made its way through the area, and Kim got to the ball ahead of Tucceri Cimini at the far post to turn the ball home. Fiorentina then took the lead in the 65th minute through Quinn, who headed in Bonetti's corner. With 77 minutes on the clock, Bonetti was set up by the instrumental Kim and fired over with her left when presented with a chance to make it 3-1. AC Milan had a chance in the 87th minute through Vero, who headed over from a Tucceri Cimini free kick. In the final moments, Šimić and Boquete had chances, but Schroffenegger saved both attempts.
