ROMA V AC MILAN: FUN FACTS

Let's run the numbers ahead of Serie A's matchday 32

A tight contest in a very hot climate: it will be a passionate Saturday for AC Milan at the Olimpico in Rome. Rossoneri versus Giallorossi, two teams on equal points in the standings and fighting for a place in the top four. Let's approach the 32nd matchday of Serie A with some fun facts and statistics related to the match.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Roma are the team against which AC Milan have had the most wins in Serie A, 78, and the second most goals scored, 253: only against Fiorentina have we scored more, 260. In recent history, we are unbeaten in our last 6 matches against the Giallorossi, including 4 wins, and in all of these last 6 games we have found the net. At the Stadio Olimpico, we have won the last two matches and the total tally is 30 away wins in our history against Roma, nobody has done better.

DEFENSIVE EXCELLENCE
Roma had collected a streak of three consecutive clean sheets in Serie A, interrupted by the defeat in the last round against Atalanta (3-1 at the Gewiss Stadium). The defensive performance at home is even more remarkable: in 2023, Mourinho's side have kept a clean sheet in seven of their eight home league matches; no team in Europe's top five leagues has performed at this level in the period under consideration. Roma have not lost at the Olimpico for five home games in Serie A, only Udinese have a longer home unbeaten streak (6). The Rossoneri's rearguard, after a difficult start to 2023, raised the wall after the break at the end of March: in the four Serie A matches played in April, three times we kept the goal unbeaten, as many as in the previous 13 games.

RIVALLING STARS: LEÃO E DYBALA
Rafa is on 12 league goals, already the best scoring season in Serie A for the 23 year-old. If assists are added to the tally, there are 18 goal contributions for the Portuguese, just one less than last season's 19 (11 goals, 8 assists). Going forward with the ball at his feet and shots on goal, one of the highlights of Rafa's playbook: Leão is first in the top five European leagues for shots following a forward run with the ball (41) and has scored five goals in this particular situation. Paulo Dybala has AC Milan as one of his favourite victims, having been involved in 12 goals against the Rossoneri in Serie A: 7 goals and 5 assists, only against Udinese has he done better in his career (17). The former Juventus man is on 6 assists this season and he has not managed better since 2016/17 (7).

PAST TWISTS AND TURNS
Some Rossoneri have already found the net in their careers against Roma: Theo Hernández did so in his first career game against the Giallorossi, on 27 October 2019; Junior Messias, on the other hand, has been involved in two goals against Roma in Serie A (a goal with AC Milan and an assist with Crotone). Roma are one of two teams, along with Sassuolo, against whom Alexis Saelemaekers has found both a goal and an assist in Serie A, both in the 2020/21 season. Davide Calabria's first Serie A goal came at the Stadio Olimpico in the Rossoneri's 2-0 win in February 2018, while in the 2-2 draw at San Siro this season came Tommaso Pobega's first league goal for AC Milan and Pierre Kalulu's only goal of the season. In his two matches against Roma in a Serie A shirt, Ante Rebić has found two goals: one on 28 February 2021 at the Stadio Olimpico and one on 28 June 2020 at the Meazza. Zlatan Ibrahimović (7 in a Rossoneri shirt), Olivier Giroud (1) and Rafael Leão (1) join the list of goalscorers against the Giallorossi.
