AC Milan v Spezia is a clash that has recent history but at the same time evokes bittersweet memories for the Rossoneri fans. The Spezia side, both at the Picco and at San Siro, have always been able to put us in difficulty, picking up two important victories against us. On Saturday evening at San Siro, AC Milan are looking for three points against a tough team, who need points and certainty. Kick-off is approaching and we prepare ourselves with some trivia for the challenge.
SUCCESS AT SAN SIRO
AC Milan have a special relationship with San Siro, shown by the eight matches they have won out of their last nine home games in Serie A, the only exception being the 2-1 loss against Napoli on 18 September. Passing at San Siro against the Rossoneri is difficult, scoring is equally so: since the start of 2022, AC Milan have kept nine clean sheets at home in Serie A, a record in the calendar year on par with Fiorentina: only Liverpool and Real Sociedad (10 each) count more domestic clean sheets in the top five European leagues in the period under review. At home, AC Milan have been leading for 298 minutes - less only than Juventus (360) - and in the home matches in which the Rossoneri have scored, they have never lost.
NOVEMBER REDEMPTION
In 2021, the month of November held no particular luck for the Rossoneri in the league. Pioli's team, in fact, did not win any of the three matches played in Serie A in that month: a draw with Inter and two defeats, against Fiorentina and Sassuolo, a string of two consecutive defeats that has not occurred precisely since November 2021 for the Rossoneri. In the penultimate month of 2022, which is the last in official competitions due to the global break, the Rossoneri want to write a different story.
WHEN LEÃO FACES SPEZIA...
He has not managed to score in his last two matches, against Torino and Salzburg, despite often coming close. But when Rafa faces Spezia, he is able to switch on: the Ligurian outfit is the Portuguese's favourite Serie A victim, in terms of numbers, already having scored three goals against the Ligurians, including the first of his two braces in the competition (4 October 2020 at San Siro). In this edition of Serie A, Leão has already bagged five goals and four assists, only Kvaratskhelia (11) and Milinković-Savić (10) have been involved in more goals than him so far.
DIFFICULTIES AWAY FROM HOME
Spezia have played six away matches in the league so far this season, amassing 0 points and 0 goals: only four teams in the history of the competition have gone seven defeats in a row away from home without finding the net (Napoli in 1939, Bari in 1950, Catania in 1955 and 1984 and Livorno in 2014). At San Siro, the Spezzini have lost four of their five Serie A matches (between Inter and AC Milan), conceding an average of 2.2 goals per game, but they did manage to impose themselves in the last away match in Milan, last season on 17 January against the Rossoneri. Spezia have a respectable record against us, having won two of their four previous Serie A fixtures so far.
