Lazio v AC Milan has, for some time now, been considered a big and special showdown. While nothing will be decided this weekend, it is undoubtedly a vital crossroads in the Rossoneri’s season. As we wait for tonight’s 20:45 CEST kick-off, let’s take a look at some facts and figures relating to AC Milan’s 34th fixture of the Serie A campaign:
PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS
1- Lazio and AC Milan are set to meet for the 158th time in Serie A. The Rossoneri’s league record against the Biancocelesti reads as follows: 68 wins, 59 draws and 30 defeats.
2- Lazio are the team AC Milan have played out the most draws against in Serie A (59). However, there hasn’t been a stalemate between the two sides since 25 November 2018 (1-1). The Rossoneri have netted 249 times against the Biancocelesti, who could become the third side to concede 250 goals against the Diavolo in the Italian top flight (after Fiorentina and Roma).
PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS IN ROME
3- In the last nine league matches at the Olimpico, there hasn’t been the same result twice in a row (four Biancocelesti wins, four draws, two Rossoneri victories).
STATE OF PLAY
4- The match pits together two of the four teams that have kept the most clean sheets since the start of the second half of the league season: nine for AC Milan, six for Lazio (the same as Roma and Genoa). The Rossoneri haven’t conceded in any of their last six Serie A matches and haven’t recorded at least seven consecutive clean sheets since February 1994 (nine back then). In 2022, the Diavolo have shipped just seven goals in the Italian top flight; only Liverpool (six) have conceded fewer in the Top 5 European leagues.
GENERAL STATS
5- AC Milan have the best attack in the opening 15 minutes of matches this season (twelve goals, level with Verona). Lazio are the next best team in this particular ranking (eleven).
6- On the one hand, Lazio are the team that have recovered the most points from losing situations at home in the league (ten); on the other hand, AC Milan are the team that have dropped the fewest after taking the lead on the road (two, the same as Atalanta).
7- While AC Milan have had the most shots (59) following high turnovers (312, also the most in the league) this Serie A season, the Biancocelesti have been the most successful in turning such situations into goals (ten).
PLAYER FOCUS
8- Rafael Leão could become the fifth Portuguese player to reach double figures in a single Serie A season, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Rui Barros, Rui Costa and Beto. Out of this group, however, he’d be the only one to achieve this before the age of 23. After finding the net against Genoa, Leão could score for two successive matches in the Italian top flight for the first time since September, when his second goal came against Lazio.
9- Out of the 15 defenders who have made at least 80 recoveries in Serie A since the start of 2022, only Chiriches (923 minutes, 83 recoveries) has done better than Pierre Kalulu (991 minutes, 81).
10- Ante Rebić has been involved in four goals in five matches against Lazio in Serie A, including two assists in the reverse fixture.
