A deserved victory after a wait of 2920 days. At the Wanda Metropolitano, the Rossoneri picked up a fantastic three points, a result that had been missing in the Champions League for eight years and, above all, keeps them in contention to qualify for the last 16. Here are all the stats to come out of tonight’s thrilling match in Madrid:
1- After previously losing their last three against Atlético Madrid, AC Milan have won their first match against the Spanish side in the Champions League, also keeping a clean sheet in the process.
2- Before AC Milan, the last Italian side to win on the road against Atlético Madrid in a European competition was Parma in the UEFA Cup, in April 1999 (3-1).
3- Junior Messias scored with his first-ever shot for AC Milan. Before Messias, the last Brazilian AC Milan player to score a goal in the Champions League was Kaká, who also netted against Atlético Madrid.
4- Junior Messias’ goal at 86'26" is the latest that AC Milan have scored in the Champions League since Mario Balotelli netted at 93'10" against Ajax in October 2013.
5- AC Milan have kept a clean sheet against a Spanish side in the Champions League for the first time since April 2006, when they did so against Barcelona. They've also won a Champions League match against a Spanish team for the first time since February 2013, when they defeated Barcelona 2-0.
6- After two draws and five defeats, AC Milan have won a Champions League match for the first time since November 2013, when they beat Celtic.
7- AC Milan only conceded two shots in the opening 45 minutes. The last time they allowed fewer opposition efforts at goal (one) in the first half of a Champions League fixture was in December 2007, against Celtic.
