An incredible victory after a topsy-turvy game. After 24 penalties, AC Milan came out on top, beating Rio Ave 9-8 in the shootout after a 2-2 draw in the Europa League playoff. It was a crazy game that saw the Rossoneri take the lead, lose the lead in extra time and equalise from the spot in the 120th minute. Here are seven facts on the Rossoneri's win:
- In the last three seasons, AC Milan are the only Italian side to have reached the Europa League via the qualifiers.
- The Rossoneri have won a penalty shoot-out in a European competition for the first time since the 2003 Champions League final against Juventus at Old Trafford.
- AC Milan have now scored in 17 consecutive matches, their best run since September 2017 (26),
- The Rossoneri played in extra time of a European competition for the first time since March 2007, against Celtic in the Champions League round of 16 when a Kaká goal secured a 1-0 win.
- Hakan Çalhanoğlu's goal was the first scored by an AC Milan in extra time in a European competition for the first time since March 2007 (Kaká v Celtic).
- Alexis Saelemaekers (21 years and 96 days) is AC Milan's youngest goalscorer in a European competition since Alexandre Pato in October 2009 in the Champions League. The Belgian's goal was the first scored by AC Milan against a Portuguese side since November 2008 (Ronaldinho v Braga).
- Daniel Maldini made his first start for AC Milan 4141 days after his father Paolo last played (31 May 2009, Fiorentina v AC Milan).
