TIME MACHINE: FIORENTINA v AC MILAN

The story of a previous encounter from 2014 featuring Mexès and Balotelli

Matchday 7 of Serie A, the Rossoneri are set to stop at the Franchi before the break. Their next match will be against Palladino's Fiorentina, a challenge that is always intriguing and complex. As we approach this clash, let's rewind the tape and go back ten years to the 2013/14 season, revisiting a previous encounter against the Viola. A highlight in a tough season, but also the start of a small positive streak. We're talking about the 2-0 victory marked by Mexès and Balotelli on 26 March 2014.

As the calendar approached Matchday 30 of Serie A, the Rossoneri, led by coach Clarence Seedorf, were struggling in the league, while Fiorentina, managed by Montella, aimed to secure a place in the top four. Seedorf had taken over in early January, but the team's performance had been inconsistent. Prior to this match in Florence, AC Milan had recorded three losses (to Juventus, Udinese, and Parma) and one draw (against Lazio). Confidence was waning, and a strong display was essential to shift momentum. At the Franchi, AC Milan found their stride, taking advantage of two set pieces. In the 23rd minute, Mexès scored with a header, converting a rebound from Neto after Balotelli’s powerful free kick.

In that match, the standout player was Rossoneri number 45, who started alongside a trequartista trio of Honda, Kaká, and Taarabt. After taking the lead, AC Milan created several solid chances to extend their advantage, with Muntari and Taarabt both coming close to scoring on two occasions. However, it was Balotelli who truly stole the spotlight in the 64th minute with a spectacular free-kick goal. A short run-up followed by a curling shot that soared under the crossbar, leaving Neto helpless. In the closing moments, Nigel de Jong nearly added a third goal, but the score remained unchanged. AC Milan secured the victory, kicking off a five-match winning streak and ultimately finishing the season in eighth place.
