The trip to Monza will be an absolute first for AC Milan in Serie A. The match against the Brianzoli is one of the many Lombard derbies that has featured AC Milan: in addition to the more traditional matches against Inter and Atalanta, the Rossoneri have also (but not only) faced Varese, Como and Brescia in the top flight. With our usual Time Machine, we go back in time to relive the last few away matches on these three Lombardy pitches.
4 MAY 1975: CHIARUGI'S GOL AS AC MILAN ROUT VARESE
We are at the end of the league season, on matchday 28 (out of 30) in the 1974/75 Serie A. AC Milan, led by coach Giagnoni, came to Varese with the aim of getting the three points and getting closer to qualifying for next season's European competitions. The all-Lombard affair was decided by a goal from Chiarugi in the 35th minute: a clinical header from a free-kick that left the Biancorossi's last man stranded. The Italian striker's goal was enough for AC Milan to conquer Varese and keep themselves in the running for the final charge for European football. The Rossoneri would finish fifth on 36 points in a season of further improvement after finishing seventh in the previous year, while Varese would finish bottom of the table and return to the Serie Cadetta after just one season in Serie A.
15 DECEMBER 2002: COMO BEATEN, THE ROSSONERI STAY IN COMMAND
In Como, Ancelotti's Rossoneri struggled but secured a vital win in the midst of an exciting season. At the Stadio Sinigaglia, it was Ambrosini who opened the scoring in the 20th minute with an angled low shot from Inzaghi's pass. The Rossoneri's lead only lasted two minutes: in the 22nd minute, the hosts found the equaliser with Pecchia, who converted the rebound from a Dida save into the net. Ambrosini's great performance was further improved with a left-footed assist for Shevchenko's header that made it 2-1 in the 42nd minute. In the second half the result hung in the balance without being rocked, and AC Milan took all three points. At the end of the year, their hunt for the Tricolore would not come to fruition, but the Rossoneri would celebrate with successes in the Champions League and Coppa Italia.
1 FEBRUARY 2020: REBIĆ PUNISHES BRESCIA
Pioli's AC Milan is starting to take shape. At Brescia's Rigamonti, the Rossoneri secured up their third consecutive win thanks to a goal from substitute Ante Rebić on the matchday 21 of Serie A 2019/20. The hosts started strongly and created several opportunities to score, but the biggest chance of the first half came from Ibrahimović missed the target from close range. AC Milan came into their own during the second half and in the 71st minute they found the winner: Zlatan's cross was flicked on by Castillejo and Rebić headed it home. In the final minutes, Theo Hernández smashed the crossbar and the game ended 1-0.
