AC Milan v Juventus is not only the fixture between the two most successful sides in Italian football, but also a match with a century-long history that never fails to provide entertainment and unforgettable matches. It is one of those matchups that demands the attention of the entire world, attracting viewers from five continents. Choosing just one previous encounter between the Rossoneri and the Bianconeri to relive in our Time Machine was a difficult task, so here are five:
15 OCTOBER 1995: A FLYING START ON THE ROAD TO THE SCUDETTO
Two outstanding teams of that season: on the one hand, AC Milan, fresh from a Champions League Final and eager to redeem 4th place in the championship; on the other is Lippi's Juventus, who will win the Champions League Final in May in Rome. At San Siro, in a big match played in just the 6th match-day, it was the Diavolo who took the three points thanks to goals in the first 15 minutes from Simone and Weah - Del Piero's goal in the final half was inconsequential - thus flying to 15 points in the standings and picking up a result that would prove important in the conquest of the 15th Rossoneri Scudetto.
22 MARCH 2003: THE PRELUDE TO MANCHESTER
When you talk about AC Milan in the spring of 2003, the first thought is inevitably the Champions League Final classic. Two months and a few days before the night that transformed Old Trafford into our Theatre of Dreams, however, a crucial league match took place, just before the last break of the season. AC Milan were in the hunt for three points to put themselves back in the running for the Scudetto, Juventus urgently needed to keep their pursuers at bay. Everything happened in the first 25 minutes at the San Siro: Shevchenko opened the scoring in the 4th minute, Nedvěd responded with a free kick in the 10th minute, and the 14th goal of the season of the great SuperPippo Inzaghi was the deciding factor.
29 OCTOBER 2005: THREE GOALS TO DEFEAT THE UNDEFEATED
Another challenge coming early in the season, on matchday 10, and representing a direct clash. First against second, with Juventus having made a clean sweep by winning their first nine games (for AC Milan in second, a draw at Ascoli and a loss in Genoa against Sampdoria). Ancelotti's team put on a fantastic first half, with great football and plenty of chances, in front of a packed San Siro: goals from Seedorf, Kaká and Pirlo sent the Bianconeri to sleep, with Trezeguet's goal in the final minutes only serving to fix the score at 3-1.
22 OCTOBER 2016: LOCATELLI'S LIGHTNING BOLT
We are keeping with October for another early-season encounter, with the two teams, however, going through different phases in their history: for the Rossoneri it is Vincenzo Montella's first year in the dugout; for the Bianconeri the hunt is on for what would be a historic sixth consecutive Scudetto. The last meetings against Juventus, by the way, had not been kind to AC Milan, whose last victory over the Bianconeri came on 25 November 2012. The spell of seven consecutive defeats was broken by a great goal from Manuel Locatelli, who recreated his goal from 20 days earlier against Sassuolo and made the San Siro explode with joy, with the two teams meeting again two months later in Doha for the Italian Super Cup.
7 JULY 2020: A SPECIAL COMEBACK
An unusual date for any season, in the middle of the recovery after the long stop due to the pandemic. The atmosphere is decidedly different from the full houses of the aforementioned matches, and after a deadlocked first half, the match seemed to be over with the double Bianconeri advantage thanks to Rabiot-Ronaldo. After an hour had passed, however, something special happened at San Siro: Pioli's team overturned it with three goals in five minutes, Ibrahimović-Kessie-Leão scoring before Rebić's final 4-2 goal in the 80th minute. That July night was to become one of the many preludes to the current AC Milan, the one that was to play at the highest level over the next two seasons.
