LOFTUS-CHEEK IS THE MVP FROM AC MILAN v STADE RENNAIS

Ruben received the most votes following the Rossoneri's 3-0 Europa League victory

That’s exactly what he was looking for in Europe. Although he was excellent in the Champions League - his performance against Paris Saint-Germain was particularly outstanding - he wasn’t quite able to score or provide any assists. But in the first game of AC Milan’s Europa League journey, that changed. Indeed, he was a real thorn in Stade Rennais’ side, bagging a brace with his head. Ladies and Gentlemen, Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The Englishman was a powerful and decisive presence at San Siro as he continued his fine goalscoring form: since the start of 2024, he’s found the net against Empoli, Roma, Udinese, Bologna (x2) and now Stade Rennais (x2). While his double against Bologna was only enough for a draw, his two latest goals put AC Milan well in control of yesterday’s game and the play-off tie in general. Although there’s still work to do, he can take delight in being voted as the team’s best first-leg performer by the Rossoneri fans on the AC Milan Official App. The midfielder received 77% of the votes, thus finishing well ahead of Leão and Gabbia.

After being named the MVP for January, Ruben certainly isn’t letting up. Previously, the last Rossoneri midfielder to bag a brace in the knockout stages of a European competition was Kaká, who did so in that unforgettable 3-0 semi-final second-leg victory over Manchester United in April 2007. Given how that tournament ended, may it be a good omen! Loftus-Cheek has now found the net seven times in total this campaign (two assists). Since the start of the calendar year, out of all the midfielders who play in Serie A, he has the most goals to his name in all competitions (six, the same as De Ketelaere).

During the 75 minutes he spent out on the pitch, he scored twice from two shots on target, had 33 touches, played 21 successful passes, completed two dribbles (one led to a big opportunity for Musah) and created three chances. He really is making a difference and is in fantastic condition on both a physical and mental level: “I feel increasingly free. I’m working to get into positions closer to the box so I can be even more decisive. I hope to keep it up. My record tally for a season is ten goals… let’s see,” said a delighted Ruben to Milan TV. Well played!
