What a tournament! The Rossoneri march started off in quiet fashion against Swiss side FC Aarau, but the team picked up steam in the second round where, in the Parken Stadium in the Danish capital, they defeated FC Copenhagen 6-0. This match was followed by a 0-0 stalemate on a snowy pitch marked by red lines against Anderlecht. Dejan Savićević was not included in the squad for that match, with tension existing between the player and Coach. However, Fabio Capello would in due course bring out the best from the midfielder, who would in turn become the focal point of the team.
Before leaving for Toyoko and the Intercontinental Final against Sao Paolo, il Genio Savićević lit up San Siro with three assists in AC Milan’s 3-0 victory over Porto. From that point on, the Rossoneri only grew stronger. The Diavolo took on Monaco, who had finished second in the other qualifying group, in a single-leg semi-final. They emerged 3-0 victors once again, but Baresi and Costacurta's suspensions worried the Rossoneri fans. The stands in Athens for the final contained many more Blaugrana supporters than Rossoneri, but AC Milan put in a performance for the ages against Johan Cruyff's side. Five years later, the Rossoneri fans would choose that 4-0 victory in the Greek capital as their side’s Match of the Century.
