AC Milan looked completely different by this stage: compared with the very first AC Milan of the Berlusconi era, not only was Arrigo Sacchi in the Azzurri dugout, Carlo Ancelotti had also left Milanello. But AC Milan moved on in style, attracting envy from all sides for their campaign in the transfer market. In came the major signings of Papin, Boban, Savićević, Eranio and Gianluigi Lentini. The Rossoneri squad was now markedly stronger than it had been the previous season. And at the turn of the year, AC Milan were already well on their way to securing the league title and a place in the European Cup final.
Marco van Basten, having seen the Rossoneri’s triumphant start to the season and just been awarded his third Ballon d’Or, decided to undergo an operation on his ankle after matchday 13. AC Milan had finished top of the table at the halfway point of the season, but without their Dutch striker they slowed down. Nevertheless, a few days after their loss in the final in Munich against Marseille, they secured their 13th Scudetto. When the team was defeated at home against Parma in March, AC Milan had set a new record for consecutive league matches without defeat: 58, from May 1991 to March 1993.
