Many suspected that AC Milan had lost their soul in the summer of 1991 and, on a psychological level, the transition from Arrigo Sacchi’s visionary football to Fabio Capello’s pragmatic style wasn’t easy, nor did everyone accept it straight away. In that summer, Sacchi left the Club to become Head Coach of the National Team and it was Fabio Capello who took his place. Had AC Milan returned to being a normal team as a result? On a tactical level, the answer was yes, but their ability to win games was still far from normal: they continued to stack up numerous crucial victories.
AC Milan led the table early on, were top at the halfway stage and then went on to secure the title without losing a game. They managed an unbeaten Scudetto run and scored 74 goals in the process with van Basten leading the way with 25. Some of their most emphatic victories included a 5-0 thumping of Napoli, a 5-1 thrashing of reigning champions Sampdoria and an 8-2 victory at Foggia on the final day. The legendary “Invincibles” were made up of Sebastiano Rossi in goal, a solid defence of Tassotti, Costacurta, captain Baresi and Maldini behind the three irresistible Dutchmen, and then other champions like Massaro, Donadoni, Albertini, Evani and Ancelotti completed an unrivalled team.
