EUROPEAN SUPER CUP 1989

San Siro in Milan, 7 December 1989

FIRST LEG

Camp Nou in Barcelona, 23 November 1989

AC Milan were without Franco Baresi for their two-legged tie against Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona in the European Super Cup. The Rossonero of the Century had received a nasty blow from Jurgen Klinsmann in AC Milan’s 3-0 league victory in the Derby. The main headline surrounding the first match was the plane’s turbulence before landing in Catalonia, by which Mauro Tassotti was particularly horrified.

However, after the 1-1 draw in Barcelona, Tasso would recompose himself in the return match and ultimately lift the European Super Cup for the first time. Thanks to Evani’s great goal, the Rossoneri were then able to confidently prepare for the trip to Tokyo for the Intercontinental Final against the Colombians from Medellín coached by Maturana. The 1989 European Super Cup was raised to the Milanese sky by AC Milan on St. Ambrose’s day: a fitting homage.
