Mark Hateley started his football career at Coventry City, and captured Milan's attention scoring 22 goals for Portsmouth in the 1983/84 season. Powerful, hard-fighting and excellent in the air, he joined Milan in the following season along with his national teammate Ray Wilkins. His Italian adventure got off to a brilliant start and reached its peak on 28 October 1984 when his header made the Rossoneri win the derby, a victory that they had been longing for since the time of their 10th league title.
