Starting with the 1988/89 season, the Serie A increased the number of foreigners allowed per club to three, and Arrigo Sacchi decided to reinforce AC Milan’s midfield with Frank Rijkaard who alongside fellow Dutchmen Ruud Gullit and Marco Van Basten formed a remarkable trio who carved their names in the club’s history. Physically powerful and endowed with extraordinary tactical awareness, the Rijkaard proved to be decisive scoring the winner in the European Champion Clubs’ Cup final against Benfica in 1990 and hitting a brace in the following Intercontinental Cup against Olimpia Asunción.
