Cafu, Pancaro and above all Kaká were the summer reinforcements for the Champions of Europe, who narrowly lost the Supercoppa Italiana to Juventus in New York on penalties. In the league, the team had a great rivalry with Roma, beating the Giallorossi at the Olimpico on 6 January thanks to Shevchenko's brace. The Ukrainian striker, who would be awarded the 2004 Ballon d'Or, and the Brazilian, Kaká, dragged the team to a great comeback season, culminating in a 17th Scudetto, won on 2 May at the San Siro against Roma. The dream duo combined again: Ricky's assist and Andriy's header.
On the continental stage, the season got off to a great start with a victory in the UEFA Super Cup. A goal from Shevchenko decided the match against Mourinho's Porto in Monte Carlo. The Champions League campaign also began well, with the Rossoneri winning Group H, ahead of Celta Vigo, Club Brugge, and Ajax. However, 2003 ended on a disappointing note as the Rossoneri lost on penalties in Yokohama to Boca Juniors in the Intercontinental Cup. In the Champions League round of 16, we faced Sparta Prague, defeating them with a brilliant 4-1 win in the return leg at San Siro. The same result was achieved in the first leg of the quarter-Finals against Deportivo La Coruña. The Galician side came back in the return leg and brought our journey in the 2003/04 edition of Europe's top competition to an end.
