Having returned to Serie A, AC Milan started the 1983/84 season with a much-renewed squad, especially in the defence and midfield. Under the orders of the new manager, Castagner, the arrivals of Gerets in defence and Blissett in attack stood out, as well as a product of the Youth Sector: Filippo Galli. The year started with four good home wins (Verona, Catania, Sampdoria and Lazio) interspersed with as many away defeats. The middle of the season, however, saw the Rossoneri establish themselves with 14 good results over the next 16 matchdays, cruising in mid-table. Despite the change in the dugout from Castagner to Italo Galbiati, the Serie A season ended with them in 8th place with 32 points, a short distance from the European spots. The top scorer of the season was Oscar Damiani, with 11 goals between the league and the Italian Cup in which AC Milan went as far as the quarter-finals against Roma who went forward thanks to a goal in extra time in the return leg at San Siro.
