DERBY DELIGHT FOR THE ROSSONERE

Grimshaw, Piemonte and Vigilucci with the goals as AC Milan beat Inter 3-1 to climb to third

The third derby of the season has gone AC Milan’s way. After defeats in the previous two meetings this campaign, it finished 3-1 to the Rossonere on matchday five in the championship round thanks to goals from Grimshaw, Piemonte and Vigilucci. At the PUMA House of Football, Ganz’s girls were the ones deservedly celebrating on the pitch at the end. The team’s approach was excellent and they managed to take a lead into half-time. Then, during the most difficult moment of the match following Inter’s equaliser, the group dug in and responded in formidable style.

Needless to say, Piemonte provided the inspiration as she found the net for the eleventh time this league season and also provided an assist on a day where Dompig made her first appearance for the Rossonere. It’s AC Milan’s first victory in the second phase of the Serie A season, and they’ve now moved ahead of Inter and sit level with Fiorentina in third on 38 points. With only big showdowns remaining in the fixture list, the team’s next game will be a home clash against Juventus at 14:30 CEST on Sunday 30 April.

MATCH REPORT
Dompig
and Polli had the opening chances of the game: the Nerazzurra nodded over following Chawinga’s run (3’), while the Rossonera connected poorly with the ball (6’) and then, from a corner, cleared the bar with a header (10’). In the 23rd minute, Adami wasn’t able to make the most of an opportunity on the counter, but it was a positive sign for AC Milan, who took the lead four minutes later: K. Dubcová played in a free-kick and Grimshaw applied the finishing touch. On the half-hour mark, Piemonte failed to hit the target with an overhead kick, while Giuliani then thwarted Karchouni as the visitors made a rare foray forward. Adami was once again involved just before the break, but her shot was blocked.

Inter went on the attack after the restart: Giuliani kept out van der Gragt’s close-range header (50’) and was then tested by Santi (53’). In the 54th minute, an effort from Polli was charged down in the heart of the box. It seemed like only a matter of time before the Nerazzurre scored, and they did so in the 61st minute: Chawinga couldn’t be stopped and picked out Polli, who was left with the straightforward task of depositing the ball into the net. Adami tried to breathe life into AC Milan with a powerful effort from distance, but the team continued to struggle. There was a scare in the 70th minute as Giuliani expertly denied Polli. The Rossonere dug in and, almost out of nowhere, Piemonte took centre stage, firing home with a lethal left-footed strike (81’) and then setting up Vigilucci to score with a precise right-footed effort from the edge of the area (83’). It was a double knockout blow for Inter and decided the match in AC Milan’s favour, with Soffia, Adami and Piemonte having further chances to make the scoreline even more emphatic late on. However, it remained 3-1.
