From 13 August to 4 June, Serie A 2022/23 was one of the longest and busiest seasons ever. Almost 10 months of matches that confirmed AC Milan among the top four in the table, for the third consecutive year. A season, one that is now in the archives, that produced several interesting facts and statistics from a Rossoneri perspective. Here are some of them:
HOME SWEET HOME
On the cover of the season there is undoubtedly the fans. With an average of over 71,000 spectators per match (and never under 68,000 in the league), the fans have supported us with affection and passion throughout the season. It is no coincidence, then, that the team ended the year with an excellent home run: 43 points (only Napoli did better) with just two defeats, the fewest since 2011/12. Furthermore, the 41 goals scored at San Siro is the best figure in the entire Serie A in home matches.
WHO STARTS WELL...
No team in Serie A 2022/23 lost fewer points, once they have taken the lead, than AC Milan: in the 22 matches in which the Rossoneri have gone ahead, 20 wins and two draws. The excellent start to the game by Pioli's team can also be traced in the number of goals scored in the first 30 minutes of the match, an impressive 21. Here again, no one else in the league has done better than AC Milan in this category.
THE GOAL COOPERATIVE
As many as 16 Rossoneri players found the net in Serie A 2022/23, with two - Rafael Leão with 15 goals, Olivier Giroud with 13 - in double figures in goal-scoring. Three players (Ballo-Touré, Origi, Pobega) scored their first league goals in an AC Milan shirt, and again three have reached their best scoring figures for the Rossoneri: in addition to the aforementioned Leão and Giroud, there were also Brahim Díaz's six goals. No less than four Rossoneri goals, finally, won the Serie A award for the best goal of the month: Leão against Inter in September, Díaz against Juventus in October, Saelemaekers at Napoli in April and Hernández against Lazio in May.
APPLAUDABLE RAFA
For the third consecutive season, Rafael Leão improved his goal-scoring turnover to 15 goals in Serie A 2022/23, goals that earned us 12 points. It was an important year for the Portuguese man, who also added 8 assists, contributing to 23 Rossoneri goals in the league. Rafa was our most frequent player (35 games played) and with the most shots (92), as well as being the first in the entire league for completed dribbles (an impressive 79). In two months - October and April - the Rossoneri's number 17 was also the winner of the MVP of the month awarded by the Lega Serie A.
FANTASTIC OLI
Also improving on Serie A 2021/22 was Olivier Giroud, whose 13 goals marked his best season since 2015/16, when he scored 16 with Arsenal. The 5 goals scored from headers - all in 2023 - made him the best scorer (along with Victor Osimhen) from this point in this calendar year, while the 8 left-footed goals helped make AC Milan the team with the most left-footed goals in Serie A 2022/23 (32, 50% of the Rossoneri's goals). Our number 9's goals have brought 11 points to the Rossoneri's cause, making his contribution even more valuable.
INDIVIDUAL FUN FACTS
We saw earlier how AC Milan scored most in the first 30 minutes of the game, but two of the 10 latest goals of the season are also Rossoneri: Leão at Empoli and Saelemaekers at Roma. Sandro Tonali was one of the best players in the league in terms of chances created (62), while Fikayo Tomori stood out for the high number of successful passes (1685 of the 1896 attempted), thus confirming himself as the pivot of the Rossoneri's play. Also noteworthy were Pierre Kalulu's many progressions with the ball at his feet, an impressive 505: it is the 7th best figure in the league. Mike Maignan ended his season with 8 clean sheets in 22 appearances, a 36% that places him fourth among goalkeepers with who played at least 20 games.
