AC MILAN v SAMPDORIA: FUN FACTS

Facts and stats ahead of Serie A matchday 36

Back in action. The Champions League is behind us and Serie A looms. We have three games left to finish the season on a high and win a spot among the top four, the first of which is against Sampdoria on Saturday 20 May (20:45 CEST). Here are some facts and stats on the game.

STREAK
The Rossoneri haven't lost to the Blucerchiati since 30 March 2019 when Defrel scored the only goal at Marassi. That remains the Genoese side's only win in the last ten meetings between the two sides. AC Milan are unbeaten against Samp since that day and have won all of their last three (all by just one goal): 1-0 on 23 August 2021, 1-0 on 13 February 2022 and 2-1 on 10 September 2022. This is the Rossoneri's longest winning streak against the Blucherchiati since the period between 1999 and 2005 when AC Milan won five in a row. Furthermore, AC Milan haven't conceded a first-half goal to Samp in their seven most recent matches in the league.

BREAKING THE FAST
The Rossoneri are, since the 2-0 win over Lazio, without a win in their last three games. The team will want to get back to scoring, as will Olivier Giroud who scored one of his eight league goals this season against Sampdoria (the only one away from home). Oli is without a goal in six Serie A matches and double figures are only two away. Another great striker Fabio Quagliarella is hoping to bag his first goal this season so that he doesn't go without scoring in Serie A campaign for the first time in 17 years.

ROSSONERI GOALS: WHERE, HOW, WHEN
AC Milan have scored more goals in the first half an hour of games than any other side in Serie A in 2022/23: 18. In addition, they have the highest percentage of goals from open play: 84%, 46 of 55. The speed of the Rossoneri's attackers is summed up in another stat: AC Milan are the team that has attacked the most on the counter in the league this season with 49 attacks of this nature (20 more than Udinese who are second in this ranking on 29). Sampdoria, in a season with little to shout about and now with relegation confirmed, have the worst attack (21 goals scored) and the lowest conversion rate (6%).

MILESTONES
Head coach Stefano Pioli is just one point away from registering 700 as a coach in Serie A (699). A win tomorrow would also take him to 100 wins in all competitions with AC Milan (99). Pierre Kalulu made his 100th AC Milan appearance when he featured in the second leg of the derby and, with a win against the Blucherchiati, would record his 50th victory with the Club. Olivier Giroud, meanwhile, needs just one assist to reach 50 in Europe's Top-5 leagues. The Frenchman has set up five goals in the league this season, his best since 2015/16 (six in the Premier League with Arsenal).
