AC MILAN v CREMONESE: TIME MACHINE

Twenty-seven years later, the Rossoneri host the Grigiorossi at San Siro: relive the last previous fixture in Serie A

It was the 1995/96 season and AC Milan faced Cremonese in front of their own public to close out a championship they had led and won for the 15th time in their history. Twenty-seven years on, the Rossoneri return to host the Grigiorossi at San Siro and, with our Time Machine, we go back to relive that very challenge in the top flight on 12 May 1996.

SETTING THE SCENE
The last matchday of Serie A 1995/96. The Rossoneri have already won the Scudetto with two games to spare and, at San Siro, they host Cremonese to end the year that made them champions of Italy in the best possible way. The occasion was also one to say goodbye to two club icons like Mauro Tassotti, who officially retired at the end of the following season, and Roberto Donadoni - who then moved to the New York Metrostars in the summer. AC Milan vs Cremonese, moreover, will also be the last Rossoneri game with Fabio Capello in charge, before going to Real Madrid. The Grigiorossi, who had held AC Milan to a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the Zini, appear in front of the 60,000-plus San Siro condemned to relegation to Serie B, but with the aim of taking one last satisfaction in the Lombard Derby.

AN OWN GOAL OPENER, LEVEL AT HALF-TIME
There was a festive mood at San Siro and the Rossoneri, prepared with the usual 4-4-2, fielded the attacking pair of George Weah and Paulo Futre. Right from the start and, in the 7th minute, AC Milan took the lead: Weah shot from outside the box, De Agostini deflected it and deceived Razzetti, finding an unfortunate own goal. Cremonese responded in the 22nd minute: Maspero hit the crossbar from a free kick, Florijančič was first to the rebound and scored the equaliser. The visitors gained courage and made themselves dangerous from Rossi's side with two chances for Tentoni and Maspero, but it was Boban who came close to overtaking again at the end of the half with a great right-footer from the distance. 1-1 at the break.

WEAH GETS THE PARTY STARTED, ROSSONERI IGNITE
In the second half, it was Weah again who made the San Siro crowd rejoice (59'): a violent shot from the edge of the penalty area, Razzetti failed to repel, and the ball ended up in the goal for the 2-1 Rossoneri lead. Two minutes passed and a right-footer by Albertini was deflected by Giandebiaggi into his own goal for the third, before the fourth from Panucci's head on an assist from an uncontainable Boban in the 65th minute. The standing ovation for Tassotti anticipated a finale that turned into a Rossoneri goleada: between the 83rd and 86th minutes, Capello's team scored three times, with Di Canio's brace and - in between - Boban's well-deserved stamp. It ended 7-1 to the roaring applause of the whole stadium.
