AC MILAN v TORINO: TIME MACHINE

Three past meeting, one per decade, in the history of the Rossoneri-Granata rivalry

Only against two teams - Juventus and Inter - has AC Milan played more official matches than against Torino. A fixture rich in history, the one between the Rossoneri and the Granata, which has experienced several notable encounters over the years. As we approach matchday 22 of Serie A 2022/23 we relive, in our Time Machine, three very different editions of this fixture from three different decades.

8 DECEMBER 1991: GULLIT AND MASSARO SEAL THE TITLE
Let's start over 30 years ago, the beginning of the 1990s. 8 December 1991, more than 70,000 fans packed into San Siro for the clash between two top teams: the Rossoneri would win their 12th Scudetto at the end of the season, while the Granata would go as far as a historic UEFA Cup Final, knocking out Real Madrid in the Semi-Final. A great performance was therefore needed, and Capello's AC Milan responded with 90 minutes full of chances and sealed by a goal in each half. In the first half an acrobatic strike by Gullit, from Evani's cross; at the start of the second half Massaro's finishing touch, a header from the centre of the box left the score at 2-0 at full time. It was an important win, cementing their place at the top of the table over their pursuers Juventus and Napoli.

6 OCTOBER 2002: INZAGHI'S HAT-TRICK, AC MILAN BAG SIX
The second match we are going to relive has a very different premise. The 6-0 win in the 2002/03 season, in fact, represents one of the widest scorelines in the history of previous meetings between the two teams. It was at the dawn of an unforgettable season, with Ancelotti's AC Milan taking to the pitch in their usual Christmas tree formation and sealing the win in the first half alone. Pirlo's penalty, a second from Inzaghi' and a third goal from Serginho, who had also assisted the second goal. The second half then became a formality, with Dalla Bona's league debut and minutes given to a young Marco Borriello too, but the match went down in the statistical annals for Inzaghi's 'perfect' hat-trick, his first for the Rossoneri: his left-footed goal in the first half was followed first by a sharp finish into the corner with his right, for the fourth, and then (after an own-goal by Fattori) a header for AC Milan's sixth.

21 AUGUST 2016: A FIRST FOR CARLOS
From hat-trick to hat-trick, 14 years apart. From Filippo Inzaghi to Carlos Bacca, who left an unforgettable mark on the first day of the 2016/17 season: a year full of changes, on and off the pitch, at the Rossoneri. It took the Colombian striker 38 minutes to give Vincenzo Montella his first win as manager. Abate's cross and Bacca's diving header made it 1-0. The second half was much livelier, especially the start: after the Granata equalised through Belotti, Carlos replied with his second of the game in the 50th minute, Niang's cross was met by the Rossoneri's number 70, who headed it in with his right, before completing his hat-trick with a left-footed strike in the 63rd minute. It was the first hat-trick in Serie A - and for AC Milan - for Bacca.
