DIOGO DALOT IN FOCUS

Let's get to know the Portuguese youngster and new Rossoneri signing better

Diogo Dalot, a Portuguese defender born in Braga on 18 March 1999, is a new Rossoneri player. After coming through Porto’s youth ranks, he signed for Manchester United in the summer of 2018 at just 19 years of age. Over the course of just over two seasons, he made 37 appearances (two of which came with the Red Devils’ U23 side), including in Europe: he took to the pitch four times in the Champions League (after having already done so once for Porto) and on three occasions in the Europa League.

CHARACTERISTICS
Naturally a right-back, he’s more than capable of making an impact when pushing forward, which is why he’s often been compared to his compatriot João Cancelo in Portugal. It’s no coincidence that Diogo has always taken inspiration from a player like Dani Alves. Standing at 1.84 m tall, he occasionally played in central defence for United and, more often than not, out wide, where he made his mark both in England and for Porto.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER
Diogo has been involved in Portugal’s youth setup ever since he debuted for the U15s in 2014. He then became a European champion with Portugal’s U17 team in 2016: he scored the goal that gave his country the lead against Spain in the final, while he also netted in the penalty shootout that decided matters. Also involved in that game were another two Rossoneri players: Brahim Díaz and Rafael Leão. Diogo is now part of the U21 side alongside Leão.

STATS AND TRIVIA
In his first season in the Premier League (2018/19), Dalot was the youngest Manchester United player to make more than three league appearances. In the same season, he was the third-youngest player to provide at least two assists in the English top flight: Ryan Sessegnon and Dwight McNeil were the only players younger than him to achieve the same feat. The new Rossoneri defender made his Champions League debut at the age of 18 years and 353 days when Porto played Liverpool in the round of 16 in March 2018.
