For the first time in their history, AC Milan secured a third consecutive Scudetto. Yet the season began without the fanfare of the summer of 1992. There were no spectacular purchases but plenty of substance: above all, there was plenty of Savićević. The Montenegrin had been restored to the side by Capello in the decisive moment of the season in the aftermath of the European Super Cup defeat against Parma at San Siro. Dejan would paint and Marcel Desailly would sculpt. Following Boban’s operation on his meniscus, the balance in midfield was guaranteed by the arrival of the Frenchman, who formed a great barrier protecting the Diavolo’s defence.
Laudrup, Raducioiu and Panucci also contributed. This was the season where Marco Simone cemented his place in the starting XI and where Fabio Capello relied upon Daniele Massaro’s substantial goal output. Sebastiano Rossi also set a new Serie A record for the goalkeeper with the most minutes played without conceding (929 minutes, stretching from AC Milan 2-1 Cagliari in December to AC Milan 2-1 Foggia a few months later). In van Basten’s absence, the Rossoneri turned to their defensive prowess to see them through games, conceding just 15 goals in 34 games.
