The 1991/92 league season was the first in which the Rossoneri beat Parma twice. During the season before that, AC Milan had only managed one loss and one draw against Nevio Scala’s Crociati team. And now it was time to face Parma again after they’d won the Coppa Italia in 1992. Despite being the underdogs, Sandro Melli, Taffarel, Minotti, Osio, Asprilla and co. put up a good fight from start to finish at San Siro for the Super Cup against the Rossoneri in August.
AC Milan took the lead through van Basten early on and at that stage a Rossoneri win seemed like a foregone conclusion. It wasn’t so simple. Parma hung in there and Sandro Melli equalised just before half time. The Rossoneri had to fight hard to earn victory, because the Crociati weren’t going to roll over. Daniele Massaro, the Dutch Swan’s perfect partner, then scored to make it 2-1 and spur the Rossoneri team on to victory. The new season started in the perfect way for AC Milan, with van Basten and Massaro hailed as the Cup Kings by the papers.
