Scudetto 1950/51

The Rossoneri become Italian champions again after a long wait

1907-1951: a barren journey. However, 50 years after winning their first Italian title in 1901 against Genoa, AC Milan were back as Italian champions. It was Gre-No-Li’s second year, with their first season producing the great 7-1 win on Juventus’ pitch in February 1950. That historic success sparked admiration for the Rossoneri from the great cyclist, Fausto Coppi. However, the team was extremely attacking and not always balanced that campaign, so AC Milan had to settle for second place.

The defence needed fixing and that was done in the summer of 1950 with the arrival of full-back Silvestri and Renosto. AC Milan, led by Busini and Czeizler, finally won the Scudetto after 44 years of waiting. They mathematically cliched the title on Sunday 10 June 1951 at San Siro despite a 2-1 loss to Lazio, because Inter had also lost. Time seemed to stop during the tense wait for the results to come through. Then, finally, the stadium’s loudspeaker announced, “In Turin, Torino beat…”, and the crowd erupted. AC Milan also won the Coppa Latina that year after beating Lille 5-0 in the final at San Siro.
