Scudetto 1906

Following on from their 1901 triumph, AC Milan become Italian champions again

By this stage there were finally nets in goals, and with this important addition AC Milan inaugurated the pitch at Porta Monforte, where the Rossoneri would play until 1914. After winning 4-3 on their own ground, AC Milan went on to win 2-1 against U.S. Milanese at Comasina. There was a refereeing error in the second fixture, but Milanese accepted the on-field verdict and didn’t lodge a complaint. The final phase to assign the title was fought between AC Milan, Juventus and Genoa.

It was, however, essentially a face-off between AC Milan and Juventus, because despite snatching a point from both the Rossoneri and Bianconeri, Spensley’s Genoa team had been in sharp decline that season. Therefore, everything was in the balance between AC Milan and Juventus: Juventus won 2-1 in Turin, AC Milan won 1-0 at Porta Monforte. A play-off was needed: 0-0 at the Velodromo Umberto I in Turin. The Federation decided another match was required in Milan, but Juventus protested and didn’t show up. The Rossoneri were crowned champions.
